In the dry, dusty surroundings of San Pedro de Atacama lies the 12th century pre-Inca fortress Pukara de Quitor built by atacameño people in self-defense.
The best way to reach it (around 3 km from San Pedro) is by bike although the ride through sand in the hot sun requires good stamina.
