Children of favela

Children of favela love to be captured on photos. They pose like film stars thinking that thanks to the pictures they will become famous. Sometimes you can hear them following you and screaming: "Gringo photo! Gringo photo!"...

Inside the favela

And this is Rio that not everyone knows or wants to know...Together with the luxurious hotels and financial districts it shows its "worse" face in favelas - zones of poverty in which life runs by different rhythm. They are not only in suburbs. Many invided the centre and coexist with the "better" world so at some point you start to wonder if there are favelas in Rio or Rio in favelas...
One thing to be mentioned: don't believe in stereotypes which show favelas as places where only crimes and drug traffic take place. Mostly these are normal communities of decent, hardworking people that like we all try to make ends meet...

It is told that there are over 900 favelas in Rio with tendency to grow. The one I visited is Rocinha - the biggest one - around 250 000 inhabitants!
